A Ball

While we were driving home from Pocatello in May, Evan was watching a Little Einstein DVD about planets, stars, etc. The narrator was talking about all the different planets, their names and a little information about each one. Several times we heard Evan saying, "a ball." I've thought about this for the last few months off and on, but yesterday he reminded me of it again when we were looking at some pictures. I showed him a picture of the moon and he said, "a ball." I know it's not that big of a deal for a toddler to call a round object a ball, but for some reason I keep going back to this.

I can't quite articulate what I have been thinking about this and it is frustrating me... I guess what is standing out to me is that so often I make things more complicated than they need to be. At the base level, most things are simple and plain. I'm going to try to keep this in mind when I get in complicated situations or feel overwhelmed and remember that deep down, even objects that are out of this world, are still balls.

Just Funny

This morning Gary couldn't find his cell phone, so he left home without it. When I got home at lunch, the love seat was turned over and the cushions were in a pile. Gary is holding the house phone and says, "it's in there somewhere." :) So, he dials up his cell phone number and sure enough, the couch starts ringing! He spent some time trying to get it out, but decided he is going to have to remove some of the legs and take the staples out of the bottom fabric to get his cell phone out. I say take a hack saw to the thing, then we can get new couches!!!

It was pretty funny to me, but now that I've been listening to the "missed call" beep all afternoon, I'm not thinking it is quite as funny as it was earlier.

Poor, poor Gary.

Awesome

Gary and I realized yesterday that Evan has been saying awesome. We are pretty sure we don't say awesome, so I'm not sure where he picked it up. This morning when I asked him if he wanted a bit of my turkey saugage or my waffle, he said awesome, so maybe someone is saying, "that would be awesome" to him. Who knows.

I thought it was awesome when I looked at the mountatins this morning and saw snow. Awesome!!!

Snow Watch

I know it's not very popular right now to say I'm happy the weather is changing, but I am. I'm not convinced I'm ready for snow like we had last year, but I'm sure if we do get that, I won't mind the adventures that snow always brings. I have this habit that started when I was in elementary school. As soon as the weather starts to change, I start anticipating the snow. Actually, I don't just start anticipating, I start watching for it. When I wake up each morning, I feel drawn to the window to see if any snow has fallen. In my mind I realize that the snow won't start falling for quite some time yet, but I just don't want to miss that first glimpse of fresh snow on the grass and trees. From our house we can also see Baldy, so I watch for the snowline there too.

The best place I have ever been for snow watching is Anchorage, AK. In Alaska, they have what is commonly known as a termination line. The snow or termination dust slowly starts making its way down the mountains and in days gone by, any work being done in the mountains, logging, mining, etc. would terminate as the snow got further down the mountain. It's a very distinct line that comes lower each day or week as the temperature drops to the point that the snow finally makes it to the valley. It's really fascinating to watch if you are a professional snow watcher like I am...

I'm happy to wait a little longer for the snow to appear, because I also love watching the leaves change color and I love the inevitable wind and rain storms that strip those trees of their summer coverings. Winter will provide a new covering and I'm just not sure which one is more beautiful. I'm happy to live in a place where I can experience them both.
